Crews Are Stocking Nearly 400,000 Fish This Fall In Maine

While conditions have slowed this year’s efforts, crews with Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife have been busy stocking fish in Maine waterways this fall.

Over the next month, crews are expected to stock nearly 400,000 fish throughout Maine, including fall fingerlings measuring 6 to 8 inches and fall yearlings averaging 12 to 14 inches.

Officials with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said drought conditions and warm water temperatures have hampered this year’s stocking efforts. But, they said, they are currently stocking trout and salmon.

Fish culturists are using both trucks and planes to stock trout and salmon. The Maine Warden Service is helping crews reach remote ponds by air.

While some places in Maine close to fishing in the fall, officials said more than 900 lakes lakes and streams throughout Maine remain open to fishing. That includes the Belgrade Lakes Region, the Rangeley Lakes Region, and the Moosehead Lake Region. Check Maine’s Special Fishing Laws page to see what’s open.
